The galea (aponevrotica) is a membrane situated between the skull and the scalp. During infancy, this membrane is very thin. Following adolescence, a man’s galea is influenced by male hormones and progressively thickens. In some men, the galea membrane can grow to 10 times its original thickness. When this occurs, the galea compresses the scalp and the blood vessels circulating blood under it. This compression of the blood vessels reduces the amount of nourishing blood reaching the hair bulb (follicle) and roots. Unable to obtain the nutritious elements it needs to grow, the hair grows thinner and thinner and becomes more and more fragile until it finally stops growing.
